IPOD Video: City of God

"City of God" contains a relentless stream of stories, characters and crime set in a Rio de Janeiro slum over three decades. Its inexorable logic of helplessness and violence brings you into the lives of people so desperate that bloodshed achieves a kind of banality.

Compelling in its faithful portrait of a Rio "favela," or slum city, and of how violence really takes place when people no longer care, "City" is a major achievement for Fernando Meirelles, one of Brazil's best-known commercial directors. (He has given a co-director credit to Katia Lund, who helped guide him in this tricky environment.) With Miramax's marketing machine behind it, the film will have every opportunity to make a bold statement at the North American boxoffice. The only turnoff will be for those unable to take such relentless brutality.
